From Imports to Innovation: Why We Reinvented Bot Shop

“For years, we sold electronic parts. But we watched newbies, parents and educators struggle: cheap imports, bad or no documentation, mismatched tutorials, with kids and hobbyists giving up. Confusion and searching the internet for days are in the order of the day. The market was flooded with ‘stuff’—but no real solutions.”

The problem we saw

For years, we sold electronic parts. But we watched parents., students, hobbyists and educators struggle: cheap imports, mismatched tutorials, and giving up becomes a big reality. The market was flooded with ‘stuff’—but no real solutions.

Are the competitors in this space wrong? Absolutely not. Tinkering and playing with cheap stuff is a good idea because you do not want to blow up expensive stuff (this happens all the time when learning). Their and previously our target market, however, is geared towards customers who have at least some experience.

Parents that are confused about what robotics kit to buy

We saw an opportunity that fits very nicely with our company culture of making robotics fun and entertaining. We are one of a few companies that have held workshops and created training courses on our imported kits. So, we have decided to go full-throttle in robotics and coding education, but this time, we will do so with our own developed kits.

Changing direction

Business solves problems. The problem of supplying electronics and robotics modules has been solved. In fact, you will find a supplier for all your needs quickly, and you will find them in abundance.

But we know that there is a problem that we can solve that no one else can solve right now. That problem is the confusion, the giving up, the endless Internet searches, the buying the wrong stuff, the mismatched manuals—the list goes on and on. Our number one question is, "Where do I start?"

So, we spent well over a year working with teachers, parents, students, and kids to design the XO Skeleton and Steam Punk series. No more scattered parts. No more guesswork. Just complete kits that make learning robotics fun, easy, and unforgettable. We designed the robots, the material, and the videos, and all are made in South Africa by Bot Shop.

Parents do not just buy an educational robot. They buy a complete robotics and coding educational stress-free all-in-one kit. Manuals, step-by-step instructions, training videos, and online support are all included. Nothing else is required. We start at the absolute beginning and build from there with fun and exciting lessons and activities. We are the Yoda, the kids are the heroes, and you made it all possible.

We have educator manuals for teachers. We even have assessments, PATs, and PowerPoint presentations to use in class; all these are done for you. Teachers do not need additional training; they learn alongside the kids and can jump on our weekly live Q&A sessions or use our forums when they get stuck. Schools love us because we follow the SA Caps 100%, and our robots are approved by SITA and ICASA.

The Future.

“This is just the beginning. The Steampunk Series for more advanced robotics and coding is coming soon—but for now, we’re focused on helping every child and absolute beginner in SA say, ‘I did it!’”

Our Cyberpunk series will be available at the end of the year. This will include a whole range of AI edge devices and IOT devices. We most definitely did not forget about our current customer database! We will have very unique things available for our current customers, and we are sure we will WOW even the most experienced customers.
